Microneedling at Home: A Beginner's Complete Guide

Thinking about starting microneedling at home? Here's everything you need to know before your first session — what to expect, how to prepare your skin, and how to avoid the most common mistakes.

Microneedling used to require a clinic visit and significant recovery time. At-home devices have changed that — but getting started correctly makes a significant difference to both your safety and your results. Here's a beginner's guide to doing it right.

Step 1: Choose the Right Needle Length

For first-time users, start with 0.25mm–0.30mm. At this length, results are excellent — improved serum absorption, stimulated surface collagen, refined texture — without the more significant recovery of deeper lengths. The Lonvitalité 0.30mm Microneedle Derma Roller is the ideal starting point for most skin types.

Step 2: Sanitise Before Every Session

This is non-negotiable. Spray your roller with the Derma Roller Sanitising Spray and allow it to air-dry for at least 2 minutes before use. Never share your roller. Never use a roller that has been dropped or stored without its cap. Unsanitary rolling is the single most common cause of adverse reactions.

Step 3: Prepare Your Skin

Cleanse thoroughly and pat dry. Your skin should be clean, dry, and completely free of makeup, SPF, and active skincare ingredients. Avoid retinol for 48 hours before rolling. Avoid glycolic acid and AHAs for 24 hours prior.
